DAY 1 - Tie Dye Presentation

After a crash (almost) course in block printing - we moved back upstairs for the tie dye demonstration.

Hanif, also only 19, had only been practicing the craft for two years. He also studied at Kala Raksar. And now he was teaching his cousing Sikander the craft.

A lot less fabric and dye preparation was needed for tie dye. Unfortunately all the dyes were synthetic. And Ceclia was alarmed to see that Hanif and Sikander were handling the dye with their bare hands.

Hanif also briefly mentioned that his design inspiration came from nature, such as rain, and water ripples.

1. The design is drawn on acetate, and holes a punctured throughout so that the design can be transferred onto the fabric using diluted dye and a rag.

2. Tie dye;
Running stitch.

Wrapping.

3. Dyeing in a few colours; Wrapping one section of the design very tightly, so the dye doesn’t seep through.

Immediately all of us could see the potential collaboration of block printing and tie dye crafts.

It was great to see that sustainability was already considered by these young designs. Sustainability sometimes seems like a gratuitous afterthought in fashion. However, Hanif had already integrated recycling in his craft. The rubber used to wrap the fabric is recycled tyre rubber. And the “gadget” used to wrap the thread around the fabric tightly, is a syringe cap with a hole in the top.
